Chingy: Thurr
built 640 days ago
With the release of the single Right Thurr in 2003, Chingy immediately found himself with an international audience. The popularity of the song pushed his debut album Jackpot up to the #2 slot on the charts the week of its release, quickly earning it triple-platinum sales figures. His sudden popularity was subsequently reinforced by the follow-up singles Holidae Inn and One Call Away, both of which made a similar impact on the charts. The simplistic nature of Chingy's music attracted some crticism... and some sources in the press made considerable hay out of unfavorable comparisons to both Nelly and his current mentor Ludacris. No doubt he shed bitter tears on his way to the bank. The popularity of Right Thurr was given a second push a year later by its inclusion in the video game NBA Live 2004.

This Chingy kid has got a set of balls on him, for real. Not in the homie lover way. When Ludacris and Chaka Zulu heard "Right Thurr" they quietly slipped him in the DTP lineup, pushing Shawnna to the side so son could swing for the fences. You really can't blame them; it's the silliest song of the summer. That's right, don't front like it's some Def poetry, "Right Thurr" is strictly a summer Bubble Yum tune.. and that's all good, you need that in your life.

Soon after gaining his deal, Chingy was featured on various DTP songs and songs with artists such as Busta Rhymes, Fat Joe, Ja Rule, Nick Cannon, and appeared on the 2 Fast 2 Furious soundtrack. Chingy ... became a huge cameo man as he appeared in videos by Lil Jon, J-Kwon, Ludacris, DTP, Shawnna, Snoop Dogg and others. He still was not very well-known to the public. Ludacris had put out some promo singles to create hype around Chingy. This was not very successful, initially. He then went back into the studio to record one more song, "Right Thurr," originally this was just a promo song, but due to its success, it was made the lead single from his debut album, Jackpot.

Chingy first appeared in 2003, thanks to his smash hit "Right Thurr." He comes from a Dirty South background, with colleagues Nelly and Ludacris very much involved in getting his career started. Chingy is a rapper with plenty of charisma, and although he has yet to find his own identity, his style, a cross between Eminem's nasality and Nelly's straight-up horniness, is exactly the sort of pop-rap combo that has been all over the radio since Jay-Z broke it open in the late 1990s.

Biography: Similar in style to fellow St. Louis pop-rapper Nelly, Chingy enjoyed a lot of success initially in his career, beginning with the summer 2003 smash hit "Right Thurr," yet he struggled to rival that success in subsequent years. Chingy began rapping as a kid in his native St. Louis, citing Run-DMC and Ice Cube as early heroes. “I ... listen to my share of old school music,” he says, “so I know as much about Luther Vandross as I do about NWA.” He blew into Atlanta in his early 20s and got scooped up by DTP, who scored with a trifecta of Top 3 pop/R&B/Rap crossover hitsĀ ”Right Thurr,” the RIAA gold “Holidae In” (featuring Ludacris and Snoop Dogg), and RIAA gold “One Call Away.”
