Hand out the copies of the pictures of the zodiac animals from Twilight Zone's Chinese Horoscope and the horoscope chart from Chinese Horoscope Signs and Their Corresponding Years. Use the animal names on top of the chart to identify the zodiac creatures in the picture. Explain that, like the cat, rat, and ox, each of these animals is a symbol. Brainstorm with the students until they can come up with several adjectives to describe each of the 12 animals in the picture. Now hand out copies of the chart (provided in pdf format). Write the three categories on the board as well.
The Chinese Zodiac consists of a 12 year cycle, each year of which is named after a different animal that imparts distinct characteristics to its year. Many Chinese believe that the year of a person's birth is the primary factor in determining that person's personality traits, physical and mental attributes and degree of success and happiness throughout his lifetime. To learn about your Animal Sign, find the year of your birth among the 12 signs look to the left and find the year you were born. If born before 1936 add 12 to the year you were born to find your year.

The Chinese zodiac signs are ... used by cultures other than Chinese. For one example, they usually appear on Japanese New Year's cards and stamps. The United States Postal Service and those of several other countries issue a "Year of the _____" postage stamp each year to honor this Chinese heritage. However, those unfamiliar with the use of the Chinese lunar calendar usually just assume that the signs switch over on Jan 1 of each year. Those who are serious about the fortune telling aspect of the signs can consult a table, such as the one above.
In the Chinese Zodiac there are five basic elements of which all things are made of. Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth. These are combined with the twelve animal signs of Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Lamb, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig to form the sixty year cycle.
The Chinese zodiac sign is based on lunar calendar. It changes to a new sign on the lunar new year's day. You may have a different zodiac sign than you thought. Find your true zodiac sign by entering your birthday below:

Twelve Signs make up the Chinese Zodiac. Legend has it, the twelve animals were summoned by Buddah to a race. The order in which they completed the race would determine the ranking order of the signs. In order to test the animals, Buddah charted the course across land and sea. The clever rat, knowing there was no chance for victory, surveyed the group of animals and decided that the best option was to climb onto the back of the ox who was capable of moving fast across land, strong enough to move through rough terrain, and could swim across water. Just as they neared the finish line, the Rat jumped off and ... became the first sign!
