Generally speaking, the Chinese classic texts refer to texts, be they written in vernacular Chinese or in classical Chinese, that existed before 1912, when the last imperial power in China, the Qing Dynasty, fell. These can include shi (史, historical works), zi (子, philosophical works belonging to schools of thought other than the Confucian, but ... works of agriculture, medicine, mathematics, astronomy, divination, art criticism, and all sorts of miscellaneous writings) and ji (集, literary works) as well as jing.

The primary comparison addressed the results of Chinese versus non-Chinese studies. “Chinese studies” refers to studies performed in the People's Republic of China, regardless of the language of publication. All of them have been performed in people of Chinese descent. Chinese studies are further classified according to whether they are indexed in PubMed or not. “Non-Chinese studies” refers to studies performed outside of China, regardless of the language of publication and regardless of the “racial” descent of the studied populations. Non-Chinese studies are further classified according to whether they evaluated people of Asian or non-Asian descent.

This short novel tells the story of infamous Tang Empress Wu Zetian, the only Chinese empress to actually rule China on her own. (Other empresses ruled but ostensibly only as regents to a child emperor.) The novel was famous for being the first one to depict sexuality in a very graphic manner... serving as the prototype for all the ones that followed.
