China is rapidly losing manufacturing jobs in the same industries where the U.S. and other major countries have seen jobs disappear, such as textiles. Matthew Spiegelman, Economist at The Conference Board and co-author of the study, notes: “The U.S. lost 202,000 textile jobs between 1995 and 2002, a tremendous decline by any measure. But China lost far more jobs in this sector –1.8 million. All told, 26 of China’s 38 major industries registered job losses between 1995 and 2002.”

The Precision Technology Segment will be moving additional laser and high speed air bearing spindle manufacturing from two UK facilities to GSI's China facility. GSI currently manufactures certain lasers and selected high speed air bearing spindle components in Suzhou, China. GSI will reduce manufacturing capacity at its UK facilities, streamline operations, and discontinue production of selected low volume legacy product lines after consultation with customers. The manufacturing transfer and related restructuring is expected to be completed by the end of 2007.

There are three very important requirements to make contract manufacturing work in China. The first is a comprehensive, well-thought-out vendor selection and oversight program. Next is to have one’s own resources on the ground in China. The third is a quality program that is administered with zero tolerance for noncompliance.

Italian apparel fabrics manufacturers, the world's biggest suppliers of high-end fabrics, said they have plans to expand investment in China , a market with a huge potential in the future. Italy , which firmly rejected inexpensive Chinese textile goods in the last round of trade dispute, is hoping to sell more fabrics to China to offset losses in its home market. That's the message from the ongoing Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics 2005, a leading industry fair which ends tomorrow.

Besides the outstandingly low labor rate in China, of great significance to its manufacturing performance is the ever-improving economic infrastructure. Throughout China, transportation networks are being upgraded to facilitate the large volume of exports being produced in its factories.
