In 1959, a failed uprising against China's invasion and occupation of Tibet forced Tibetan Buddhism's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, and 100,000 of his followers to flee to India. The invasion of Tibet and a perceived rivalry for the leadership of the world Communist movement caused a serious souring of relations between China and the USSR, former allies. In 1965 Tibet was formally made an autonomous region of China. China's harsh religious and cultural persecution of Tibetans, which continues to this day, has spawned growing international protest.

For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences. Paper and gunpowder, for example, are Chinese inventions and Chinese developments in astronomy, medicine, scholarship and other fields were extensive. A tomb unearthed in Changsha contained a heliocentric model of the solar system, and showed its occupant wore a bra — it is 3,200 years old.

China holds the largest human population in the world, with many people still at a low standard of living. With this population still growing and now expanding into what were once remote places, these factors inevitably lead to the over-use of wildlife and habitat fragmentation and loss. Given the close relationship between wildlife and human beings who share the same land, conservation will not only need strong government assistance, but it will ... need the direct involvement of local communities.

China is failing to honor its commitment to better its human rights record ahead of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Human Rights Watch said today upon releasing its World Report 2008. In bidding to host the Olympics, the Chinese government promised the International Olympic Committee and the international community that concrete improvements in human rights would take place in China ahead of the Games.
