Deliriously silly yet as suspenseful as a Hitchcock film, Chicken Run borrows from such great prisoner-of-war movies as The Great Escape and Bridge on the River Kwai for a yarn about chickens trying to get off the farm. They are led by Ginger (voice of Julia Sawalha), a plucky (sorry, couldn’t help it) young rebel who keeps getting caught during escape attempts and dropped in a coal bin for punishment. ‘‘Have you been on holiday?’’ asks the dim but sweet Babs (Jane Horrocks). To which Ginger cries, ‘‘I’ve been in solitary confinement!’’

In Chicken Run, players must help the chickens escape from Tweedy's Farm before they are all turned into pies. Throughout the game, players will take the roles of several main characters, including both Ginger and Rocky. It will require good planning, puzzle solving, and stealth to explore the whole farmyard and find the objects needed for escape.

"Chicken Run" follows the escape attempts of the chickens on Mrs. Tweedy's farm. After numerous escape attempts, it seems there is no hope at all, depressing what appears to be the leader of the chickens, Ginger. The chickens have to produce eggs for Mrs. Tweedy, if not, they fear they might be her next meal (and that is established perfectly in the first few minutes of the film). Just as things are looking their worst, Rocky the Rooster drops in (literally) and reluctantly helps the chickens by learning how to fly. Rocky has little to no faith at all, and doesn't want to be a guiding force or anything, but as things move on, he becomes part of them. all while helping out the fellow chickens.

Chicken Run, a version of The Great Escape with Ginger (Julia Sawalha) taking over the part of Steve McQueen, tells the story of a farm full of chickens at the Audubon-Auschwitz of the Tweedy egg farm. At the Tweedy egg farm, things are fairly routine… try to escape when you can and lay your eggs, or it’s off to the chopping block for you. Ginger doesn’t like this life, and dreams of living anywhere outside of the farm. Baba (Jane Horrocks) is a complete lemming and has no trouble following anyone, but believes that whenever Ginger is put in solitary confinement (the trash can) she is on holiday. Fowler (Benjamin Whitrow), a former RAF rooster, reminisces about the good old days of fighting Jerry.

Chicken Run is a very amusing and funny movie. The film is set at a Yorkshire chicken farm in 1950s England, and the story follows the turbulent courage of a group of chickens many attempts to escape from Mrs. Tweedy's (Richardson) chicken farm. Ginger (Sawalha) is sort of the leader of the chickens that yearns for freedom the most. After many failed attempts of leading an escape, Ginger's prayers are answered when Rocky the Rooster (Gibson) arrives. Rocky is a cocky American rooster that has escaped from the circus. Rocky falls into the situation of helping the chickens escape by teaching them how to fly.
