One of the original National League franchises, the Chicago Cubs are known for their World Series drought. They have not played in a World Series since 1945 and have not won a World Series since 1908. The franchise came close in 1984, when they lost the NLCS after blowing a two games to none lead to the Padres. In 1989, the Cubs fell in 5 games to the San Francisco Giants. The 1998 Cubs were an unexpected playoff entry, needing an extra 1 game playoff win at Wrigley Field over the San Francisco Giants to win the Wild Card. The Atlanta Braves subsequently swept the Cubs in 3 games in the NLDS.

In 2003, the Chicago Cubs made history. Their playoff victory against the Atlanta Braves in first round was the first time the Cubs had won a postseason series since 1908. Controversy surrounded their loss in the National League Championship Series against the Florida Marlins, who won in seven games. Regardless of their string of lean years, fans have flocked to Wrigley Field for Cubs games for decades, with close to three million tickets changing hands every year.

OK, Chicago Cubs fans carried a lot of crosstown envy with them in 2005. But the Cubs faithful have to look at the last few years with an encouraging eye. Maybe the first 10 years of the new century will be the Decade of the Underdogs. If so, the Cubs are a prime candidate for a rise from the ashes. Nothing would be more welcome to the MLB fans that populate Wrigley Field, buying and enjoying their Cubs seats no matter what the outcome.

The Chicago Cubs are a baseball team that overshadow the more competent White Sox. Contrary to popular belief the White Sox have about as many real baseball fans as the Cubs, give or take a few. Most of the Cubs fan base is made up of occasional watchers who figure it would be fun to hang at Wrigley for one or two games each season, not true fans. These fans tend to blame their troubles on preposterous curses and/or other fans (ex: the goat and Steve Bartman), and as long as the Cubs are hovering around .500 they think they're going to the World Series. The Cubs ... have talented baseball players who are either hurt all the time (Mark Prior/Kerry Wood) or just can't get it together.
