The 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is comfortable enough to be a daily driver, yet it's still powerful enough to use as a dedicated work truck. Acceleration ranges from adequate to vigorous, depending on which V8 you select, and the automatic transmission shifts with authority. The steering feels vague on center, but it's light and precise enough for easy maneuvering. The automatic engine shutdown and startup feature work seamlessly in the hybrid truck. Additionally, the hybrid's electric power steering feels at least as good as the traditional setup.

Older versions of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickup have been praised for their strong work ethic but soundly criticized for their bland, often overly plastic-endowed cabins. With the current model, fit and finish has improved to the point where the Silverado now stands proud in that area. Of course, there are other choices in the full-size pickup truck market, but the half-ton Chevrolet Silverado remains a solid pick no matter what the intended use.

The Classic nameplate was added in the 2007 model year to distinguish what effectively are carryover 2006 models from the redesigned 2007 Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500.

Known Condition: In November of 2007, Chevrolet acknowledged a [C]ondition that may affect the 2003 Silverado instrument panel gauges. The needles may stick, flutter or become inoperative. This may cause inaccurate readings, including the speedometer and the fuel gauge. According to some blogs, this condition has shown up in vehicles with as few as 28,000 miles (45,000 km). General motors is providing owners with a special coverage if your vehicle is less than 7 years old or 70,000 miles (110,000 km), whichever occurs first. If you are outside this coverage, you will not be covered.
