Chevrolet Silverado 1500: Silverado Ss
built 191 days ago
Launched in 2003, the Silverado SS is a high-performance pickup truck built by Chevrolet. It is based on the standard 1500 Silverado, with upgrades in drive train and both exterior and interior appearance. It uses the 6.0 liter Vortec High-Output V8 rated at 345 hp (257 kW) at 5200 rpm and 380 ft·lbf (515 N·m) of torque at 4000 rpm. This was the same engine used for the second generation Cadillac Escalade. Chevrolet and GMC advertise this engine as the "VortecMAX", while Cadillac calls it the "HO 6000". The SS debuted with a standard All Wheel Drive setup, but was later changed to the current Rear Wheel Drive only format. The Silverado SS ... comes with the Z60 performance suspension and 20 in (508 mm) chrome wheels. In 2006, Chevrolet released a special edition Silverado SS under the name "Intimidator SS" (licensed by Dale Earnhardt Inc.) that came with several minor appearance upgrades, but left the bulk of the truck the same.

Most Chevy pickup trucks considered by used-vehicle shoppers will be the 1999-2006-generation Silverado 1500. Underneath the handsome styling, a family of new V8s debuted, ranging in size from 4.8 to 6.0 liters. They offered output running from 255 hp with the smallest 4.8-liter to 345 hp from the high-output 6.0-liter V8 in the Silverado SS. A base V6 was ... available, but as expected, most Silverados came fitted with one of the V8s. (Buyers looking at the heavy-duty series Silverado 2500HD and 3500 of this generation could also get a 6.6-liter turbodiesel V8 or an 8.1-liter gasoline V8.) A unique four-wheel-steering option (called QuadraSteer), came on line about midway through this generation and cut the truck's turning circle down to 37.4 feet -- around 10 feet less than a typical full-size pickup. Unfortunately, QuadraSteer was discontinued for '06, as buyers were put off by the high cost of this option.

Although the Chevrolet Silverado Classic is entering its final year of production, it’s going out with a flare. It is GM’s best-selling model. Based on a design dating back to 1999, the 2007 Silverado Classic continues to offer one of the broadest model ranges in the industry—even significantly more than the new redesigned Silverado line that’s replacing it. The half-ton Classic 1500 comes in six trim levels—compared to four for the new line—and offers unique Hybrid and SS models that the new Silverado line does not have…at least not presently.
