At one time, Chesterfield was one of the three most smoked brands of cigarettes in the United States. The non-filtered version is known for being very strong. For many years Chesterfield cigarettes were produced by the Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company. Chesterfield was the preferred brand of James Dean, who was known to be a heavy smoker, often taking in around 2 packs a day.

For many years Chesterfield cigarettes were produced by the Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company. In 1999, Liggett sold the L&M, Lark and Chesterfield brands to Philip Morris Companies Inc., now known as the Altria Group.

On March 22, 2007 at 11:30 hours, Chesterfield Fire & EMS responded to a motel fire at 2201 Indian Hill Road that was occupied by 20 adults and 3 children. Responding units were Battalion 2 (Chester), Engines 14, 18,1,12, Truck 14, Truck 12, Battalion 1 and Tactical Safety Officer. Additional units Engine 17 Company 6. Later they found that a heater started the fire.

In the late 1960s, when other brands brought out extra-long 100 millimeter length cigarettes, Chesterfield unveiled its own version under the brand name 101. The name came from the fact that it was 101 millimeters in length, 1 millimeter longer than its competitors. That fact was the basis for its advertising slogan "a silly millimeter longer", which was used in TV commercials sung to the tune of the popular Ritchie Valens song "La Bamba".

The Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company is known for Chesterfield, a cigarette brand that they manufactured from 1911 until 1998. The Drummond Tobacco Company of St. Louis, Missouri began making Chesterfield cigarettes in 1873. A 'plug tobacco war' was fought during 1897 and 1898 with Drummond and Liggett & Myers on one side, and American Tobacco Company on the other. In October, 1898, Liggett & Myers became part of ATCo trust and continued to produce Chesterfield until the 1911 trust dissolution. L&M re-blended and repackaged Chesterfield to compete with the 1913 introduction of Camel Cigarettes. Nowadays, Chesterfield is manufactured by Philip Morris.

The film, which stars Dennis Quaid, Sarah Jessica Parker and Thomas Haden Church, is produced by Michael London (“Sideways”) and Michael Costigan (“Brokeback Mountain”), with Chesterfield’s Ed Rugoff serving as Executive Producer.
