The Chernobyl is a medium-sized pack ideal for one to two day alpine climbs or dayclimbs in the winter. Clean and efficient- you won't find a single superfluous feature- yet it has everything you really need for serious climbing. The lightweight design is backed up with bomber materials that won't shred after one pitch of hauling. This year's Chernobyl has traded in the tool tubes for a universal ice tool attachment which will fit just about any tool including leashless ergonomic models.

Chernobyl's reactors had a pair of backup diesel generators, but because there was a 40-second delay before they could attain full speed, the reactor was going to be used to spin up the reactor's turbine generator. Once at full speed, the turbine would be disconnected from the reactor and allowed to spin under its own rotational momentum. The aim of the test was to determine whether the turbines in the rundown phase could power the pumps while the generators were starting up. The test was previously successfully carried out on another unit (with all safety provisions active) with negative results — the turbines did not generate sufficient power, but because additional improvements were made to reactor four's turbines, there was a need for another test.

U.S. reactors which, like Chernobyl, are graphite-cooled have no containment structure whatsoever (for instance, the Hanford Reservation in Washington which dates back to the Manhattan Project). This is probably why American experts originally assumed that Chernobyl had no containment shield.

The concluding conference of the Chernobyl Forum (held in Vienna in September 2005) endorsed UNDP recommendations for an adjustment of broader economic and social policies that will spur economic development of the region. The proposed solutions will tackle the priority problems faced by affected countries, communities and individuals and will be implemented on the Chernobyl-affected territories of Belarus, the Russian Federation and Ukraine. These solutions, which build both on fieldwork in Chernobyl-affected communities and UNDP’s development experience worldwide, will address the following three areas.
