Soon Cher was tagging along to Spector's, harmonizing behind the Ronettes, Darlene Love, Glen Campbell, The Righteous Brothers and any number of up-and-comers. Recognizing her star potential, Bono hoped to record Cher as a soloist. But Spector didn't see much in the lanky, long-haired teen. She was so nervous during her first recording sessions, that she insisted - to everyone's chagrin - that the vocally-challenged Bono sing alongside her. Surprisingly they sounded good together, and a duo was born.
Cher was born, Cherilyn Lapierre on May 20, 1946 in El Centro, California. Cher got her start in the music business as a backup singer for Sonny Bono. In the mid 60's they married and began singing as a duo. In 1974, Cher went out on her own to start a solo career and in the 80's started an acting career. Since then, she has starred in a number of movies, and released many albums.

Married twice, Cher has two children. Her daughter Chastity is from her first marriage to the late Sonny Bono. Her son Elijah is from very brief—ten days long, in fact—marriage to musician Gregg Allman in 1975.

Cher in the music video for "Believe". Cher published her first memoir in late 1998, titled The First Time. Rather than a tell-all, the book was an intriguing collection of Cher's most significant "first-time" memories from her childhood, life and Hollywood career. In January 1999, Cher performed "The Star-Spangled Banner" in front of the Super Bowl XXXIII television audience. Cher ... performed on the highly rated television special VH1 Divas Live 2, performing alongside contemporaries Tina Turner, Elton John, Chaka Khan, Faith Hill, Mary J. Blige, LeeAnn Rimes, Brandy and Whitney Houston . Later in 1999, Cher co-starred in the well-received Franco Zeffirelli film Tea With Mussolini (1999) with Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Joan Plowright and Lily Tomlin. Her successful worldwide Do You Believe? Tour travelled throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe, with the Emmy-nominated television special Cher: Live at the MGM Grand In Las Vegas airing by year's end.
Cher In the 1980s, Cher pursued an acting career. She appeared on Broadway in Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean in 1982. She reprised the role of Sissy in the film adaptation of the play. She continued to earn the respect of movie critics and fans alike by turning in a number of strong performances in such films as Silkwood (1983), Mask (1985), and Moonstruck (1987). Cher received her first Oscar nomination for her performance in Silkwood and won her first Oscar for Moonstuck in the Best Actress category.
