The surprisingly shy youngster was the daughter of a struggling actress mother, and a father that left Cher and her mother when she was three years old. Poor, and looking to pursue an acting career, Cher headed for LA at age 16, leaving behind her family and her chances of obtaining a high school diploma.

With album sales and hit singles again at a standstill, Cher decided to expand her career into serious film acting. Her earliest entertainment ambitions had always lain in film, as opposed to music. However, she soon found herself in an uphill battle trying to land credible roles for a woman now in her mid-30s with little acting experience. At the time, she was quoted as saying that she didn’t really care if she ever made another record.

Cher\'s solo career at Imperial, which had created some political problems for the couple at Atlantic, ended with the lapsing of her contract in 1967, and she moved to Atlantic. Ironically, it was this move that contributed the unhappy reversal of the couple\'s fortunes at the end of the decade.
