Chemistry Textbook: Students
built 287 days ago
The new textbook, Chemistry (a project of the American Chemical Society), is designed to support and reinforce an activity-based, student-centered approach to teaching your general chemistry or honors high school course. Most of this workshop for college/university instructors and secondary school teachers of honors chemistry courses is devoted to hands-on participation in group activities and pointers from faculty who are using the text about how this approach is accomplished in actual classrooms. These activities ... provide a way to include/explain content/concepts that may be treated somewhat differently in this text. Also included is an introduction to the Web Companion with its interactive animated exercises that illustrate, reinforce, and extend the content and concepts in the static text as well as an introduction to the Faculty Resource and Organizational Guide (FROG), a resource with complete instructions for all activities and extensive solutions to the in-chapter activities and end-of-chapter problems. There is no charge for this one-and-one-half day workshop beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning, 29 October, and ending at 12:00 noon Sunday, 30 October.

The Conceptual Chemistry textbook was originally designed to accompany a distance learning course taught at the University of Hawaii. The "Hands-On Chemistry" features that appear in each chapter, for example, were adapted from the take-home laboratories developed for this course. Furthermore, the Hands-On Chemistry Insights that appear at the back of each chapter were ... originally written for distance learning students. Distance learning students, in general, are more apt to be learning on their own. The author’s desire to produce a textbook that could "teach itself", therefore, arose from trying to meet the needs of his distance learning students.

To accompany Thomas Sorrell's Organic Chemistry textbook, this manual includes solutions for every one of the textbook's 1031 exercises. Most of the answers begin by outlining the approach needed to solve the problem, and many provide step-by-step instructions that guide the student through the actual solution, while highlighting the concepts that are important to learn. Key concepts are ... cross-referenced to material in the text. Students of organic chemistry will find this manual to be an invaluable study guide and reference.

The Standard Edition of ChemTutor® is designed to be used as a supplement to any good chemistry textbook. Students use this edition of ChemTutor® by first reading a chapter in their textbook and then working with the corresponding chapter in ChemTutor, which gives them practice working with and applying the material that they have read or learned about in class. Students find ChemTutor® to be very helpful in preparing for tests because it helps them to make sure that they know how to solve all of the different types of questions that might be on their chemistry tests. There is ... a Practice Exam option that students find to be very helpful in preparing for final exams. It allows students to select all of the different subject areas that their course has covered during the semester, and then gives them a practice exam covering exactly those subjects. They can also set the practice exam for Tutorial Mode, which gives them immediate feedback after each question to let them know whether they answered it correctly or not.
Features: Mini-lectures, Demonstrations, Animations, Home chemistry projects and Chemistry in the community Students will browse through QuickTime movies in an interactive environment that follows the Conceptual Chemistry textbook's table of contents. Then "Concept Checks" encourage students to test their understanding of key material before moving on. Student answers may be saved or printed.

DESCRIPTION: This course will use a chemistry textbook as an introduction to chemistry. Students will work with the text to learn about Chemistry, its history, Atoms, Atomic Structure, Nuclear Chemistry (the chemistry of the atom's nucleus), and Chemical Bonds. Students wishing to try for an extra .5 credit (Independent Contract) may complete chapters on Names, Formulas, and Equations, reactions of Acids and Bases, and reactions relation to Oxidation and Reduction, and one chapter of their choice on Water, Energy, Food, Household Chemicals, Drugs, or Poisons. Students will be expected to perform between 5 and 9 experiments through the course of the quarter. The course is self-directed and students work with the text and must manage their time to succeed.
