Cheating: Games
built 655 days ago
As children play games with one another, cheating will frequently occur. In the early years there is a lot of breaking of rules and conflicts in these peer struggles. Watch how children play board games or card games, and you will recognize the competitiveness, striving and social learning taking place and sometimes digressing into cheating. As children become older and approach adolescence... this behavior is much less tolerated by peers, and thus some children become labeled as cheaters. A sense of fairness has a higher value in these older peer relationships.

Attitudes to cheating vary. On one hand, cheating allows casual players to complete games at much-accelerated speed, and this is especially helpful nowadays as typical RPG games can take well over one-hundred hours to finish. For single-player games, this is largely a matter of taste. On the other hand, as internet-based multilayer games, such as MMORPG games are becoming more and more popular, cheating in those types of games are often prohibited. Most games now have cheat codes that help you in the game.

The Mercury News has an interesting piece on what it calls the rise in cheating in computer and video games. The article includes an interview with Dennis “Thresh” Fong, King of Quake, a co-creator of Ultimate Arena, where people play games for money but cannot compete anonymously, a measure Fong hopes will prevent cheating. The article blames the slow take-off of online video gaming on the cheating issue, and wraps up with an interview with the folks at Microsoft who say they understand the importance of cheat-proof games to the survival of Xbox Live.

The Internet Gambling Regulation and Tax Enforcement Act has been refined to provide better protections against tax cheating and thereby increase federal revenue from permissible Internet gambling activity. The only new fee proposed is a payment equal to two percent of player deposits placed with a licensed gambling operator - fees paid by the operator, not the individual gambler. The two percent deposit fee is designed to equalize the costs of operation in providing gambling services online as opposed to brick and mortar casinos providing gambling services in-person, and would only be applied to online operators.

A common complaint regarding Halo 2's online play has been the widespread cheating which occurred almost immediately upon the game's release. Users exploited bugs within the game and vulnerabilities of the network to win ranked games and ... increase their matchmaking rank. Though many forms of cheating do exist, the main forms are StandBying, Dummying, Modding, Bridging, Super Bouncing and Button Combos. One or any of these types of cheating will earn players a temporary or permanent ban from Bungie games, or Xbox Live entirely.

Within the context of games, sports, and competitions, cheating is about violating rules. Stated more formally, Cheating is violating the rules of a voluntary activity in order to obtain the built-in goal or benefit of participating in that activity. Ethically, it boils down to fairness. It is unfair to break established rules that others follow in good faith. Cheating most often involves using an unfair tactic or means to gain an advantage.
