Cheating after all is nothing more than a game of wits as far as teenagers are concerned. Kids delight in pulling the wool over adult eyes, if they can. Just look at the exploits of hackers!

Cheating is a highly controversial but frequently used method of playing the Pokémon games. It is notably used to duplicate rare and valuable items and to obtain certain legendary Pokémon which would not be available until a Nintendo Event otherwise.

Cheating and Deception are not the same although cheating is often accomplished by deception. If a person cheats in a card game, he will be caught and punished by the other players (or shot dead in the Old West). The cheater deceives because that's the only way he can use his unfair tactics effectively. If he doesn't hide his actions, he will be punished. In order to be an effective cheater, deceiving is often (but not always) necessary.

Cheating in gambling is practiced to gain an unfair advantage over one's opponents or the casino, usually for monetary gain, but ... to win wagers having a non-monetary forfeit. In poker and other card games, the cards can be manipulated by a skilled cheater. In casino settings, cards can be counted to predict when cards of a particular denomination are more likely to be dealt, and casinos regard this as an unfair advantage. Other gambling activities such as roulette and craps can give rise to cheating by the use of rigged equipment like loaded dice or rigged roulette wheels.

One of the first forms of cheating that took place in Halo 2 was the Standby Cheat. This cheat involved players intentionally pressing the standby button on their modem, freezing the game for other players, giving the cheater time to accomplish their objective. This cheat was heavily exploited by many players, and was quickly realized by Bungie. Players that would standby would often be detected and banned from any and all matchmaking, and in the majority of cases from Xbox Live. Players would often use this cheat to change the outcome of a game that was previously not in their favor, in order to pad their ranked matchmaking stats.

The third form of cheating can be categorized under sports and gambling. Cheating in sports is considered a serious offense and can often lead to disqualification or banning from taking part in the games in future. The most famous of such cases is the disqualification of Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson, who was not only stripped off the medal, but banned from taking part in future races. He was found to have taken performance-enhancing drugs during the 1998 summer Olympic games held in Seoul, South Korea. Several other athletes have faced similar action for taking performance-enhancing drugs.
