Che Guevara: Castro Cubans

Guevara wrote 'Notes for the Study of Man and Socialism in Cuba' in the form of letter to Carlos Quijano, editor of Marcha, an independent radical weekly published in Montevideo, Uruguay. It bore the dateline 'Havana, 1965.' In addition to appearing in March, it was printed by Verde Olivo, the magazine of the Cuban armed forces.

Guevara went ballistic over the Miami Pact, when he first learned of it, over this shameful deal with "bourgeois" elements. "I refuse to lend my historic name to that crime!" he wrote. "We rebels have proffered our asses in the most despicable act of buggery that Cuban history is likely to recall!" [11]

Guevara remains a national hero in Cuba where he is remembered for promoting unpaid voluntary work by working shirtless on building sites or hauling sacks of sugar. To this day, he appears on a Cuban banknote cutting sugar cane with a machete in the fields.

As Cuba's Minister of Industries, Che wanted to refashion human nature. With hapless Cubans as his guinea pigs, he was intent on creating a "new socialist man," diligent, hard-working, obedient, free from all material incentives and always ready to go with the program -- in brief, lobotomized shirkers or smartalecks who offered lip would find themselves behind the barbed wire, watchtowers and guard dogs of Guanahacabibes in short order.

In 2005, after Carlos Santana wore a Che shirt to the Academy Awards Ceremony, Cuban-born musician Paquito D'Rivera wrote an open letter castigating Santana for supporting "The Butcher of the Cabaña." The Cabaña is the name of a prison where Guevara oversaw the execution of many dissidents, including D'Rivera's own cousin, who, according to D'Rivera, was imprisoned there for being a Christian and witnessed the executions of many Christians at the prison.[75]

The lock of hair was trimmed from Guevara's body by Gustavo Villoldo, a Cuban-born CIA operative who helped Bolivian troops capture him in 1967. He took the hair from Guevara's head shortly before he and some of the soldiers buried him in an unmarked grave.
