Preview: The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CRNRA) is a series of sections along the Chattahoochee River near Atlanta that have been set aside for all kinds of recreation. It just so happens that nearly all of the sections are great for birding. Though you may have to share space with joggers, bike riders, pets, and who knows what else, some parts are much less heavily used and offer good birding, right near metro Atlanta. Since all rivers in Georgia are used as migration pathways, and this is one of the larger ones, both spring and fall migration can be spectacular. The units covered here are Vickery Creek, Gold Branch, Johnson Ferry North and South, Cochran Shoals, and Paces Mill/West Palisades. Also included is the Chattahoochee Nature Center, a private nonprofit facility in the middle of these other areas.
