Charter Communications, Inc. (Charter) is a broadband communications company operating in the United States, with approximately 5.73 million customers at December 31, 2006. Through its hybrid fiber and coaxial cable network, the Company offers customers traditional cable video programming (analog and digital, referred to as video service), high-speed Internet access, advanced broadband cable services (such as Charter OnDemand video service (OnDemand) high definition television service, and digital video recorder (DVR) service) and, in many of its markets, telephone service. At December 31, 2006, Charter served approximately 5.43 million analog video customers, of which approximately 2.81 million were ... digital video customers. It also served approximately 2.40 million high-speed Internet customers (including approximately 268,900 who received only high-speed Internet services). Charter also provided telephone service to approximately 445,800 customers (including approximately 27,200 who received telephone service only). In January 2006, the Company acquired certain cable systems in Minnesota from Seren Innovations, Inc. Charter acquired approximately 17,500 analog video customers, 8,000 digital video customers, 13,200 high-speed Internet customers and 14,500 telephone customers.

In July Charter was the successful bidder to acquire New York-based Bresnan Communications after the firm began receiving unsolicited offers prior to going public. The company was founded by cable industry pioneer William J. Bresnan in 1984. It had rebuilt and upgraded most of its systems and offered high-speed Internet service in about half of its markets. Charter's offer of $3.1 billion gave it an additional 690,000 subscribers at a cost of about $4,500 per subscriber, including 298,000 in Michigan, 221,000 in Minnesota, 110,000 in Wisconsin, and 61,000 in Nebraska. The acquisition gave Charter a total of 6.2 million subscribers.

The cable TV system operator serves nearly 6 million subscribers in 40 US states, making it the #4 cable company, behind Comcast, Time Warner Cable, and Cox Communications. Not just a leading cable TV player, Charter Communications embarked on a $3.5 billion system upgrade to be able to offer broadband services. Its new products include HDTV capabilities and digital telephone services (it has almost half a million phone customers). PASADENA, Calif., Sept. 23, 1997 - EarthLink Network, Inc. (NASDAQ: ELNK) and Charter Communications have announced a strategic alliance to deliver high-speed Internet access through cable modems to Charter's customers in California. The two companies have been working together to integrate the hardware and software needed to build the complex cable Internet system, and have recently completed pilot tests of both two-way and hybrid one-way cable modem service in the California communities of Pasadena and Riverside. The pilot trials were successfully concluded in July and the commercial service is now being officially launched.
