Charlton Heston: New York
built 195 days ago
In 1996 Charlton Heston attended the Conservative Political Action Conference, an annual gathering of conservative movement organizations. There he posed for a group photo that included Gordon Lee Baum, the founder of the Council of Conservative Citizens (CCC) and former White Citizens Council organizer. Former conservative Republican Senator George Allen (VA) ... appears in the photo[3] which was published in the Summer 1996 issue of the CCC's newsletter, the Citizens Informer. Notably, many other notable conservative personalities and politicians have also spoken to or otherwise have been involved in activities where the CCC was present and this itself is not particularly indicative of racist beliefs, but rather less than thorough investigation of the background of the organizations involved.

Heston had a hip replacement in 1998, shortly after he was elected President of the National Rifle Association. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1998. It went into remission in the next year following a course of radiation treatment. In August 2002, Heston publicly announced that he was diagnosed with symptoms consistent with Alzheimer's disease.[2] In July 2003, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, from President George W. Bush at the White House. In March 2005, various newspapers reported that family and friends of Heston were apparently shocked by the rapid progression of his illness, and that he was sometimes unable to get out of bed. In August 2005, a rumor circulated that Heston had been hospitalized with pneumonia at a Los Angeles hospital, but this was never confirmed by the family.

When Charlton Heston became the first celebrity president of the National Rifle Association at their 127th annual convention, excerpts of his speech were aired on all of the major television networks. In his remarks, Mr. Heston wisely suggested that the federal government more strictly enforce the existing gun laws before attempting to enact any new ones.

Long before he was tangling with Michael Moore in "Bowling for Columbine" (2002), Heston was demonstrating with Martin Luther King at the March on Washington. Dylan was there, too. Except Heston wasn't singing with Joan Baez. He was at the front of the march, alongside such celebrated Hollywood liberals as Burt Lancaster, Marlon Brando, Sidney Poitier, and Paul Newman.

Seeking a way to make it in theater, Charlton and Lydia Heston decided in 1947 to manage a playhouse in Asheville, North Carolina. In 1948, they went back to New York where Heston was offered a supporting role in a Broadway revival of Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra, starring Katharine Cornell. He ... had success in television, playing a number of roles in CBS's Studio One, one of the most popular anthology dramas of the 1950s.
