The country club was not where Mr. Sifford learned the game. And it was ... not where Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson and Gene Sarazen learned the game -- except in this regard: They all were exposed to the game by being caddies. If the talent pool for golf has shrunk -- and that appears to be the case -- it is not just for people of color but for people of modest means.

Born (June 2, 1922) and raised in Charlotte, N.C., Sifford was a caddie in his early teens and was already a scratch golfer by then. He continued to hone his game, moving to Philadelphia where a young black man had more opportunities to play. He ... got an early taste of competition in the United Golf Association tour.

When the PGA of America finally granted Sifford a tour card in 1960, he was nearly 38, past his prime. But at 45 he won the 1967 Greater Hartford Open (becoming the first black golfer to win a tour-sanctioned event), and two years later he won the Los Angeles Open.
