Charles V (1500-1558) was Holy Roman Emperor in the sixteenth century. He was descended from the Hapsburg dynastic line. His territory included much of what is now Austria, Germany and Italy as well as Spain and the Netherlands. He was a grandson of Ferdinand II and Isabella of Castille and was a first cousin of Queen Mary Tudor of England. This relation would one day give his granddaughter, Queen Isabella, a claim on the English throne. He was the father of King Philip II of Spain.

Charles V, born in 1338, king of France from 1364 to 1380, was the eldest son of John II the Good, who reigned from 1350 to 1364. A descendant of the royal Capetian dynasty (named for its founder, Hugh Capet), Charles was the third sovereign to issue from the Capetian branch of the Valois, successors to the direct-line Capetians who died out with Charles IV the Fair in 1328. (The problem of succession that arose on that occasion was a principal cause of the long conflict between France and England known as the Hundred Years' War). As duke of Normandy and dauphin of Viennois from 1350 to 1364, the young prince lived through the particularly trying and politically troubled period that marked the onset of the Hundred Years' War. In its first phase, French troops suffered two very serious setbacks : at Cr?cy (1346) and more especially at Poitiers (1356), where King John the Good was taken captive by the English . Save for a brief interval on the Continent from 1361 to 1364, the French king spent his final years in England and died while still the hostage of King Edward III in 1364. Though young and inexperienced, Charles as dauphin had to deal with the consequences of France's defeat and the ensuing crisis of the monarchy in particularly daunting circumstances, including a rebellion in Paris led by Etienne Marcel , provost of merchants ; peasant uprisings (" Jacqueries " ) in the countryside ; and the endless plotting of his cousin, Charles the Bad, king of Navarre . Thus when he ascended the throne in 1364 , Charles V was already a precociously mature ruler.

Charles V. Fitch received his early education in Fleming County, Kentucky. He was about eleven years of age when brought to Kansas, and he attended the public schools of Valeda. The first twenty-one years of his life he spent on his father's farm. Then for five years he was an independent farmer at Valeda, and after that became associated with his father in the general merchandise business. After the death of his father the store was turned over to him and he has since managed it and his genial popularity and his ability as a merchant have caused a large volume of trade to center at Valeda in recent years. His store is well situated on Main Street.

Charles V chose the figure of Charlemagne, who was crowned emperor in 800 and canonized in 1165, to surmount a fleur-de-lis at the top of the scepter. Charlemagne was already worshipped as a saint and the first Valois kings sought legitimacy by venerating him as a political figure. Charles V and his son both bore the first name of their mythical ancestor, Carolus, who had given his name to the Carolingian dynasty to which these kings wished to attach their lineage. The recent accession of the Valois to the crown (Philip VI in 1328) began a new era of art in the service of power.

"The unfinished palace of Charles V at Granada, begun by Pedro Machuca in 1526, was designed with the architecture of Bramante and Raphael in mind. Its round courtyard, which evokes the circular vestibule designed by Raphael for the Villa Madama, has superposed, unadorned Doric and Ionic columns carrying simple entablatures. Compared to Plateresque examples, it has a purity and chasteness bordering on austerity. Machuca had been in Italy as late as 1520 and could therefore translate with relative ease the grand forms of the Renaissance into a clear and direct Spanish architecture, which contrasted sharply with the tortuous complexities of the Plateresque."
