Charles Simonyi: Space
built 622 days ago
SEATTLE, Feb. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Charles Simonyi, Ph.D., the fifth private space explorer, announced today that his Web site http://www.charlesinspace.com/ now features rich new content including training video and personal interviews. Additionally, Dr. Simonyi is pleased to fully launch "Kids' Space," an interactive, educational portion of http://www.charlesinspace.com/ designed to captivate future space travelers.
Simonyi bought himself a spot on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft that went to the space station in April. Before that, he'd seen both the first shuttle and Apollo 9 take off. Then he traveled to Russia to see a launch and found out flying in space was actually possible for a civilian. "That's how it started."
While on the ISS, Dr. Simonyi will continue to share his experiences on a daily basis through his Web site, www.charlesinspace.com. The site’s new “Live Mission Coverage” section will feature live video from NASA TV, as well as Dr. Simonyi’s personal video and audio recordings direct from space. Dr. Simonyi will ... continue to blog while in orbit and answer questions posed by visitors to his site. Additionally, on the site’s special “Kids’ Space” section, children of all ages will be able to listen in on his Amateur Radio contacts with schools across the United States.
For his fee, Simonyi will spend an intense six months training for a 10-day spaceflight that includes eight days aboard the ISS. He will launch towards the space station with Expedition 15 commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and flight engineer Oleg Kotov, and return with Expedition 14 commander Michael Lopez-Alegria and flight engineer Mikhail Tyurin.

A dedicated flyer, Simonyi has racked up more than 2,000 hours piloting jets and helicopters and said his family supports his upcoming space shot. He added that he will dedicate the mission towards the advancement of civilian spaceflight while serving as a test subject for biomedical experiments and working to inspire today's youth.
