Simonyi, a tech pioneer, is considered the father of the GUI word processor and recently became a space tourist.

Chief Software Architect at Microsoft from 1981-1991, he then moved on to a position in Microsoft Research. This enabled him to pursue research into Intentional Programming, a way of extracting the essential information present in computer programs. He envisages that the removal of conventional programming languages from the construction of the human-computer interface has the potential to lead to a new economics of computer software development

Charles Simonyi was born in on Budapest, Hungary on September 10, 1948. According to Bill Gates, Charles Simonyi is “one of the great programmers of all time”. While at Microsoft, Simonyi led the development of Microsoft Office. He later moved to the Microsoft research department where he focused on Intentional Programming. Simonyi later co-founded Intentional Software where he works on this Meta Programming System and serves as President and CEO.

Simonyi was employed by Microsoft Corporation from 1981 to 2002, where he held titles of Director of Application Development, Chief Architect, and Distinguished Engineer. While at Microsoft, Simonyi hired and managed teams that developed Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and other best selling software applications. Simonyi worked at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) from 1972-1980 where he created the first WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) text editor called Bravo. Born in Budapest, Hungary, Simonyi earned his B.S. in engineering mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley, and a doctorate in computer science from Stanford University. He received a honorary doctorate from the University of Pecs in Hungary, in 2001. Simonyi has been a member of the National Academy of Engineering since 1997, elected for his contributions to "widely used productivity software" and he is a Correspondent Member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

After starting the Application Software Group at Microsoft, Simonyi went on to become the company's Chief Software Architect, a title he held until 1999. More recently, Simonyi was recognized as a Microsoft Distinguished Engineer for his pioneering technical work at the company.
