Two donations to a telescope project in Chile -- one from Bill Gates and one from Charles Simonyi -- put the amount raised for the project at $50 million. Gates gave his donation directly, while the other gift came from the Charles Simonyi Fund for Arts and Sciences. Simonyi said he was attracted to the project through "its imaginative use of technology."

A gala dinner was held yesterday at the Kennedy Center in honor of Hungarian-born technology pioneer, businessman and philanthropist Charles Simonyi. The fund-raiser was organized by the Hungarian American Coalition (HAC). Speakers at the event included HAC President Maximilian Teleki, HAC Chairman Emerita Edith Lauer, Senator John Glenn, Senator Maria Cantwell, Rep. Tom Lantos, and Ambassador AndrĂ¡s Simonyi.

The donation comes from Simonyi's newly formed foundation, the Charles Simonyi Fund for Arts and Sciences. Simonyi is a former Microsoft developer who led the team that created Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. Known as "the father of Microsoft Word," Simonyi left Microsoft last year to create his own company, Intentional Software Corp., which is working to improve software productivity.

In August of 2002, Dr. Simonyi left Microsoft and founded Intentional Software Corporation, a software engineering company focused on improving the way organizations write software. He then founded the Charles Simonyi Fund for Arts and Sciences in 2003 to support arts organizations, science programs and educational institutions. Dr. Simonyi is a trained pilot in multi-engine aircraft with current licenses in jets and helicopters and more than 2,000 hours of flying time.

With the Simonyi gift, The Seattle Public Library Foundation comes closer to achieving its $16 million private fund-raising goal for the Central Library, which is budgeted at $165.5 million. The majority of funding for the new library is coming from a 1998 voter-approved bond measure.
