Growing up with dyslexia, Schwab faced several academic challenges, particularly with reading and writing. In spite of his disability, Schwab was committed to education, and his soaring achievements in math and science led Schwab to earn his business degree from Stanford. Schwab built his business career on a core understanding of economics, finance and investments.
In May, Schwab's Investment Strategy Committee updated its model portfolio guidelines, calling for an overweighting of cash and underweighting of stocks. Specifically, the guidelines suggest that investors consider paring back on their U.S. and international stock holdings by as much as 5 percentage points each, while increasing their cash holdings by as much as 10 percentage points. Using the example of a moderate investor with a long-term target of 60 percent stocks, 35 percent bonds and 5 percent cash, this would mean trimming stock holdings to 50 percent of the portfolio and boosting cash to 15 percent.
Schwab learned early on that academic determination and perseverance would be the key to a fruitful business career. Now, having served millions of investors with over $1 trillion in client assets, his vision of changing stock investment practices is illuminated by success.
"We are pleased that FTSE's partnership with Schwab makes it possible for investors to reap the benefits of the FTSE RAFI index for the first time in a non-exchange-traded equity mutual fund," said Jerry Moskowitz, president, FTSE Americas. "Now investors have access to the benefits of indexing, but with the advantage of achieving potentially higher investment returns."
