Charles Darwin's grandfather was Erasmus Darwin, the scientist, poet, inventor, doctor and polymath. One of Erasmus's sons, Charles, planned to become a doctor like his father, but he died from an infection after accidentally cutting himself during an autopsy. So Erasmus's younger son, Robert, dutifully followed in his older brother's footsteps. In turn, Robert expected his own son — whom he named after his late brother — to practice medicine, too. But the Charles Darwin who would become famous couldn't stomach cadaver dissection. He couldn't stomach surgery, either.
Charles Robert Darwin, the scientist, produced a prolific array of work during his lifetime. Of his 19 books, his most famous and historic work On the Origin of Species was published in 1859 when he was exactly 50 years old. There has been much speculation as to why he waited so long to publish his ideas on the origin of species following the return from his voyage in 1836.

When Charles reached 16, Dr. Darwin had had enough of his son’s easygoing ways and insisted he attend the University of Edinburgh in Scotland to study medicine. A professor, John Steven Henslow, head of the botany department at the University, was impressed by Darwin’s beetle collection. It was through Henslow that Darwin met Captain Robert Fitzroy of the Royal Navy. Fitzroy was in search of a young naturalist to be his companion, without pay, aboard H.M.S. Beagle on a five-year sailing voyage around the world. As the ship’s naturalist, he was affectionately known as “Mr. Flycatcher” by the crew.

Darwins finches The most famous visitor to the Galapagos Islands was Charles Darwin, who visited there in 1835. He was the geologist on board H.M.S. Beagle, a ship commanded by Captain Robert Fitzroy, whose mission was to map the coasts of South America for the Royal Navy. On their five-year journey they visited places like Tenerife, New Zealand, Australia, Brazil, Argentina, the Galapagos Islands, Chile, Uruguay, and Cape Verde Island. Darwin collected animals, plants and fossils, and studied the geology of the countries he visited.

Robert Darwin was a giant of a man, the largest man whom Charles Darwin had ever seen, weighing in at three hundred and thirty six pounds for a six foot two frame. He was so heavy that he had to have a set of stone steps custom built for him to mount into his carriage, while his coachman would check the flooring in his patient’s houses before he entered to determine if they could support his weight
