Charles Butt - The richest San Antonian, Butt ranked 140th on Forbes 400 Richest Americans list in 2006 with a net worth of $2.2 billion. The H.E. Butt Grocery Co. (H-E-B) has more than 325 stores in Texas and Mexico. Butt inherited the company, which was originally founded in 1905 by his grandmother to support her sick husband. Butt is single with no children.
Back in 1992, Charles Butt gazed out across his family's vast holdings in HEB markets, now 284 stores and $9 billion in annual sales, and he wanted something different. Perhaps he suspected that at least some of his customers were changing, even as their lives were changing. While they still valued convenience, speed and value, they ... wanted something harder to define: an encounter with food and beverage, a store that recognized all the excitement being generated by restaurant chefs, a store with a "what's old is new again" love affair with freshness, seasonality, regionalism and variety. Among other things, some customers clearly ached to play with their food.
