Charles Babbage was an intellectual man, respected by almost everyone in his mathematical field; ... he had a strange personality to which some people had difficulty relating. Part of the reason his work on the first Difference Engine was stopped was because of a fight he got into with one of his engineers, Joseph Clement. Babbage was advised to check up on the work Clement was doing to make sure he was paying the engineer the correct amount. Clement was reluctant, but agreed to the checks. Eventually the process destroyed the trust between the two men, and their collaboration was halted in 1832, as was the funding for the project.

Charles Babbage was an English mathematician, philosopher, and one of the worlds first computer scientists. He was the very first person in history to come up with the idea of a computer which could be programmed. Some of his inventions can be seen at the London Science Museum. Charles was born in London, England in 1791. Charles' father, Benjamin Babbage was a banker who owned the Briton real estate at Teignmouth. His mother was named Betsy Babbage.

Charles Babbage developed the analytical engine project after an earlier computing project the difference engine that Babbage started in 1822. The difference engine could solve polynomial equations using a numerical method called the "method of differences". However, the analytical engine was the first general computational device, with the ability to solve different types of equations. The use of punch cards to record a program was inspired by the Jacquard loom, which used similar punch cards to control the pattern being woven by the loom.

The death of Mr. Charles Babbage, the inventor of calculating machines, is announced. He was born December 26, 1792. The analytical power of his mind was early manifested. In 1815, when he was only twenty-two years old, appeared his remarkable Essay towards the Calculus of Functions, a very general and profound sort of algebra, of which he was the chief author. About 1822, he made his first model of a calculating machine. It was a "difference engine," that is, the first few numbers of a table being supplied to it, it would go on and calculate the others successively according to the same law.

Charles Babbage was born in London on December 26, 1791. He was the son of Benjamin Babbage, a London banker. On 25 July 1814, Babbage married Georgiana Whitmore at St. Michael’s Church in Teignmouth, Devon. They had seven children, but only three lived to adulthood. Charles’ father, wife, and one son all died in 1827. In 1821 Babbage invented the Difference Engine to compile mathematical tables.
