For the purposes of the 1993 Order the Fixed Link means the same as the Tunnel System (1993 Order Article 2(3)). Similarly in the 1994 Order the expression Fixed Link in the Tripartite Articles has the same meaning as the Tunnel System in Section 1(7) of the Act (1994 Order Article 2(3)).

The twin tunnels bored under London were driven from Stratford westwards towards St Pancras, eastwards towards Dagenham and from Dagenham westwards to connect with the tunnel from Stratford. The tunnel boring machines were 120 m long and weighed 1,100 tonnes. The depth of the tunnel varies from 24 m to 50 m.

The UK has increased in size by 90 acres due to the tunnel spoil being deposited in the undercliff area at Shakespeare Cliff in a number of lagoons. This area now known as Samphire Hoe has been landscaped and is a popular venue for walks, picnics and fishing.

Various types of automobiles are moved through the Channel Tunnel on open-sided rail carriages (or rakes), a cheaper alternative than closed carriages. Open carriages would tend to fan any flames rather than contain it when the train is moving.
