Channel Tunnel Hotel The Garden Lodge, only 10 minutes from Channel Tunnel, is a convenient and comfortable hotel with private parking. Close to Dover and Canterbury. This family run guest house is well-decorated with clean rooms and a no smoking policy.
The tunnel has a network of firemains, one in each of the three tunnels, which are linked together at the cross-passages. There are hydrants at each cross-passage and at intervals of 125 m in the running tunnels. The firemain is divided into sections by valves so that leaking sections can be isolated for repair.

No government money was invested in the building of the tunnel, but British Rail had to invest significant sums to build up its international passenger and freight businesses as well as in the rail infrastructure leading to the tunnel. In all, the report says, BR spent £1.08 billion on works related to the tunnel.
Following announcements in 1981 by the French and British governments that a cross-channel link would be explored, private companies were asked to tender for contracts to construct and operate the tunnel link. In early 1986, Margaret Thatcher and Francois Mitterrand announced that contracts had been finalised and work finally began in mid 1986.

The number of passengers using the tunnel — by car shuttle or train services — peaked in 1998 at 18.4m. Duty-free shopping was abolished the same year, since when, Anguera notes, “the market began a process of regression, which continues to the present day”.
