Channel Tunnel: St Pancras
built 629 days ago
Channel Tunnel The majority of the Channel Tunnel passes through chalk marl, much of it faulted. Below the Chalk Marl is a thin 2 m (6.5 ft) band of permeable Glauconitic Marl. This rock is a weak sandstone with a stronger rock strength than the Chalk. The bottom of the tunnels pass through stiff clay with some swelling characteristics. The Chalk is much more faulted and prone to water inflows on the French side of the tunnels.

The British and French Governments have decided in favour of a Channel tunnel. A simple statement - which alone has taken two months to draft to everyone's satisfaction - was made in the House of Commons yesterday by Mr Marples, the Minister of Transport.

The tunnel runs from the east of the borough to Caledonian Road. After it has travelled under Caledonian Road it begins to surface on to the Gifford Street Railway Embankment (between Gifford St and the North London Line). This is known as the London West Portal
Both shafts were infilled and the No. 2 heading lay forgotten until 1974 when another tunnel was proposed and work restarted at the Shakespeare Cliff site. As the 1882 tunnel was likely to be bisected by the new bore, the original No. 2 shaft was excavated and the tunnel dewatered to remove any iron lining that may have got in the way of the new boring machine. The shaft was found to be unlined down to solid rock and a circular steel ribbed and timber lining was installed. At the shaft bottom the access tunnel was found to be intact although some of the timber supports had fractured due to pressure and there were numerous chalk falls. The timber was replaced at shaft bottom, a new sump was constructed and the area generally made safe. 40 metres from the shaft, the circular bore of the 1882 tunnel was located.
