Chandeliers created by artists and designers are the buzz of the London Design Festival, which runs through September 25. The exhibition of lighting designs at Royal Festival Hall, the festival’s hub, was curated by the auction house Phillips de Pury and includes the work of Gaetano Pesce, Fredrikson Stallard and Michael Anastassiades.

When the lyre fame was popular during the mid 18th century, the glass houses produced large festive chandeliers gaily dressed with brilliantly coloured glass accents. The visual fantasy of the iris chandelier captures this spirit, which is further enhanced by the swirling tendrils, gold accents and delicate hand painted banded. The hand blown glass shades were introduced during the 18th century. Their design, of English origin, was intended to diffuse candlelight. This shape with a slight inward turning of the upper lip remained popular to the mid 19th century for gas lighting. The shades present a perfect foil for the rich exuberant ornamentation.

British based lighting designer Ali Siahvoshi exhibited work at 100% Design this week, and is the designer behind Fabbian’s line of super-cool chandeliers made from knives and forks. Born and raised in Iran, Siahvoshi has a unique approach to contemporary lighting design. Using previous everyday objects, from table legs, coat hangers and cutlery Siahvoshi has designed a range of light fixtures that exemplify the beauty of recycling objects for new purposes.
