Chad Campbell is proving to be one of the top young players on tour. His decisive victory this week at the star studded Bay Hill Invitational has catapulted him into the tours elite players, especially after winning the Tour Championship only a few months ago. He started the day four shots behind Stuart Appleby who was ten shots worse than Saturday. Though Appleby faltered, Campbell had an error free 66 on Sunday and deserved the victory.
Chad Campbell shot the best round of his life Saturday at Champions Golf Club, a course he never played until this week. (article 6) His 10-under 61 broke the course record, matched the lowest score on the PGA Tour this season, and was the lowest in event history. (article 6) Sorenstam leads by six strokes in Japan Annika Sorenstam shot a second straight 9-under-par 63 for a six-stroke lead Saturday, closing in on a third straight title at the Mizuno Classic. (article 6) The lefthander from Canada, three times a winner in 2003, made a double bogey at the par-3 12th to shoot a second-round 73 yesterday, falling into a tie for 26th at 3-over-par 145. (article 16) This was supposed to be about Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh and a few others turning the PGA Tour finale into a campaign for player of the year. (article 8) That's the story line to the 17th Tour Championship, the 48th and final PGA Tour event of the 2003 season that got under way yesterday at Champions Golf Club.
Chad Campbell perhaps felt a little reaction to his stellar effort in 2003 by starting the new season in fairly low-key fashion. But that all changed at the Bay Hill Invitational when he ruthlessly hunted down Stuart Appleby in the final round to post a memorable success. He came close again at Colonial when pipped by Steve Flesch and the signs are he is going to improve vastly on his US Open record to date. There are not many players around who can better his laser-like accuracy with an iron club and his approach play to the greens is sure to be a highlight of the tournament.
Chad Campbell was born in Andrews, Tex. -- population 10,000. That's just a hoot from Lewisville, where he lives now. When you're comfortable hunting with small-town friends, there isn't much call for fancy dressing. When you play the bush league golf circuit for four years because they give you $5,000-an-event in appearance money as "the Tiger Woods of the Hooters Tour," life is pretty much open collar and low stress. Not at all like leading the Masters on Sunday.
Last year, Chad Campbell, Brian Gay, Steve Flesch, were tied for the lead entering the final round of the Bank of America Colonial. For their performance, AstraZeneca donated $50,000 to Cook Children's Medical Center. Campbell, Gay and Flesch split their charitable $50,000 donation to Cook Children's Medical Center (Campbell); the Florida Hospital Foundation and Orlando Regional Healthcare Foundation (Gay); and St. Elizabeth Medical Center (Flesch). Cook Children's Medical Center has received $116,667 over the past two years.
