Cerebral Palsy (Disabled): Child
built 607 days ago
Coping with Cerebral Palsy brings extra stress for parents at different times in their lives. The first is when their child is diagnosed with CP, next when its time for schooling and they have to start looking for special schools to educate their child, followed by adolescence with all its heartaches and peer group challenges, and lastly, with age racing against them comes the stress of future care taking of the child.

With a grant from the Hill-Burton Act and additional private contributions, Cerebral Palsy acquired the building at its present location in Quincy. Formal programs, therapy and early intervention services for children were formulated into structured programs that were individualized for each participant.

Cerebral palsy is one of the more common congenital problems: of every 2000 infants born, 5 are born with cerebral palsy. Medical experts are unable to agree about what causes cerebral palsy in children who have congenital CP. We do know that the child who is at highest risk for developing CP is the premature baby who does not cry in the first five minutes after delivery, who needs to be on a ventilator for over four weeks, and who has bleeding in the brain. Babies who have congenital malformations in systems such as heart, kidneys, or bones are ... more likely to develop CP, probably because they also have malformations in the brain. A newborn who has seizures also has an increased risk of developing CP.

Cerebral palsy is the term used to describe the motor impairment resulting from brain damage in the young child regardless of the cause of the damage or its effect on the child. Impairment is the correct term to use to define a deviation from normal, such as not being able to make a muscle move or not being able to control an unwanted movement. Disability is the term used to define a restriction in the ability to perform a normal activity of daily living which someone of the same age is able to perform. For example, a three year old child who is not able to walk has a disability because normal three year old can walk independently. Handicap is the term used to describe a child or adult who, because of the disability, is unable to achieve the normal role in society commensurate with his age and socio-cultural milieu. As an example, a sixteen-year- old who is unable to prepare his own meal or care for his own toileting or hygiene needs is handicapped.

Cerebral palsy isn't one condition. Instead, it's a collection of disorders caused by damage to the brain before, during or shortly after birth. Cerebral palsy affects people in various ways, depending on where and to what extent the brain has been injured. In some children, symptoms — including muscles that are too weak or too tight — are apparent at birth. In other children, problems don't become evident until later.

Cerebral palsy is the most-common cause of crippling in children. It is a result of nervous system damage due to injuries or disease before, during, or after birth. There is no cure. The disorder does not get worse with age. Impairment of movement ranges from minimal to severely disabling. People with the disorder may be mentally disabled or may have normal intelligence.
