Cerebral Palsy (Disabled): Brain

Left untreated, the symptoms of cerebral palsy tend to worsen. Although the brain damage itself doesn't change, the effects of that damage often do. For example, muscles that can support a 40-pound child may be too weak to support a 130-pound adult. In addition, the stress of spastic muscles causes abnormal wear and tear on the joints, which wear out or become painful. And spasticity often becomes more severe following growth spurts.

Treating cerebral palsy with hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is considered experimental even though it is widely used throughout the world. Strong emotions develop between "believers and non-believers" in the world of hyperbarics. It must be noted that HBOT is not a cure for cerebral palsy but offers a way to activate damaged or dormant brain cells which have been deprived of oxygen for a period of time.

Many individuals who have cerebral palsy have no associated medical disorders. However, disorders that involve the brain and impair its motor function can ... cause seizures and impair an individual's intellectual development, attentiveness to the outside world, activity and behavior, and vision and hearing. In general, two types of brain damage cause cerebral palsy. The first occurs when the brain develops improperly. The second — and more common — takes place when illness or injury damages a brain that was otherwise developing normally.

Between 40% and 50% of all children who develop cerebral palsy were born prematurely. Premature infants are at higher risk in part because their organs are not yet fully developed, increasing the risk of asphyxia and other injury to the brain, which in turn increases the incidence of CP. Periventricular leukomalacia is an important cause of CP. About 10% of cases with CP are caused by malformation of the CNS.
