Cerebral palsy is not a single condition. It is an umbrella term used to describe a group of conditions that cause movement problems. Although the main problem is with the muscles in one or more parts of the body, the condition is caused by damage or faulty development in a part of the brain. The part of the brain affected is in a part that sends messages to muscles to control movement and co-ordination. The damage or faulty development in the brain usually occurs as a baby is developing in the womb. Sometimes it occurs during birth, or shortly after birth.
Cerebral palsy is a condition caused by damage to the brain, usually occurring before, during or shortly following birth. "Cerebral" refers to the brain and "palsy" to a disorder of movement or posture. It is neither progressive nor communicable. It is ... not "curable" in the accepted sense, although education, therapy, and applied technology can help persons with cerebral palsy lead productive lives. It is not a disease and should never be referred to as such. It can range from mild to severe.

Donna is a beautiful woman who was born with Cerebral Palsy. She might have been a school teacher, a nurse, a member of congress, a famous movie star...who knows? But, due to an accident at birth, she must spend her days in a wheelchair with very limited use of her arms and legs. She's a natural comedian, and she has a huge heart that makes her friends wherever she goes. All too often people like Donna live their lives in isolation and despair due to lack of transportation and decent services. Donna is making a courageous effort to change all that.
Cerebral palsy is caused by an injury to the brain during pregnancy, around the time of birth, or shortly after birth. The following injuries may be contributing factors to developing cerebral palsy: infection during pregnancy, jaundice, RH incompatibility, oxygen shortage, stroke, toxicity, bleeding, kidney infections, and urinary tract infections. Some of these factors can be avoided by receiving proper prenatal, labor & delivery and post-natal medical care.
    Cerebral palsy is a physical disability.  CP occurs by an injury to the brain during, before or after birth.   "Cerebral" refers to the brain and "palsy" to the lack of motor control. In some cases, there may be seizure, mental retardation, and impairment of sight, hearing or speech. The degree of involvement varies.
