The utilitarian and decorative ceramics subsector includes chinaware produced in porcelain, faience, sandstone and terracotta. Some 540 companies employing approximately 16,500 workers, accounting for a gross output value in the order of € 380 million, operate in this subsector.

Ceramics are used in the manufacture of knives. The blade of the ceramic knife will stay sharp for much longer than that of a steel knife, although it is more brittle and can be snapped by dropping it on a hard surface.

There were two key challenges for Morgan Advanced Ceramics. This first was to come up with a design and a manufacturing process that would produce a robust, high integrity vacuum seal (leak rate 10-8mbar l/s) across a large component (200mm diameter). The second was to solve the problem of the differences in thermal co-efficient between the alumina ceramics of the tube and its mild steel flanges. Further, a very tight specification was set for the physical dimensions and cleanliness of the components.

It is not easy, or particularly affordable to import ceramics from Italy. In fact, it is risky to carry them home in luggage because they often break, even with the safest, well-intentioned packaging. However, Italian ceramics are still sought after because they are undeniably cute. Their hand-painted colorful detail has the remarkable ability to generate a feeling of well being for many people!
