Cephalexin is being marketed as Keflex® 750 mg as "taken twice per day". The advantage of Keflex 750 is that it provides the same total daily dose most health care professionals prescribe with only two capsules per day. By making Keflex 750 convenient for patients, compliance may be improved with this new dosing option. Keflex 750 is covered by most major insurers with an average copay of between $20 and $25. Retail price is approximately $45 for a 20 capsule supply.

Cephalexin, Keflex and Keftab are cephalosporin antibiotics. They are prescribed for bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, the middle ear, the bones, the skin, and the reproductive and urinary systems. Because they are effective for only certain types of bacterial infections, before beginning treatment your doctor may perform tests to identify the organisms causing the infection.

A multicentre, controlled, randomised field trial was performed in France to evaluate the efficacy of Cephalexin administered per os at a dosage of 15 mg/kg twice daily for 5 days in the treatment of cutaneous and subcutaneous infections in the cat. A total of 114 cats were included in the study. Fifty-seven cats were treated with Cephalexin-based tablets (Rilexine®, Virbac) at the recommended dosage; 56 cats were treated with Marbofloxacin-based tablets (Marbocyl® P, Vetoquinol) at the recommended dosage of 2 mg/kg body weight SID. Both treatments were administered for 5 days. Cats were clinically observed on 3 days: D0, D5 and D0 (5 days after end of treatment). On D0, a cutaneous swab was taken from each enrolled animal for bacteriological analysis.

Cephalexin belongs to a class of antibiotics, called cephalosporins. They are similar to penicillin in action as well as side effects. They halt or unhurried the growth of bacterial cells by preventing bacteria from forming the cell wall that surrounds each cell. The cell wall protects bacteria from the external environment as well as keeps the contents of the cell together. Without a cell wall, bacteria are not capable to survive. Bacteria that are susceptible to cephalexin include Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, E. coli as well as several others.

Cephalexin may be taken with or without meals. However, if the drug upsets your stomach, you may want to take it after you have eaten. Take Cephalexin at even intervals around the clock as prescribed by your doctor. If you are taking the liquid form of Cephalexin, use the specially marked spoon to measure each dose accurately. To obtain maximum benefit, it is important that you finish taking all of this medication, even if you are feeling better. --If you miss a dose...Take it as soon as you remember.
