Cephalexin: Bacteria

Cephalexin is a broad spectrum antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the skin, urinary tract, respiratory tract, bones and joints. It is available as 250mg and 500mg capsules and as a liquid containing 250mg/5ml. When mixed with water the liquid should be kept in the refrigerator and any unused portion should be discarded after 14 days. The usual dose for dogs and cats is 5-15mg/pound by mouth every 8 to 12 hours.

Cephalexin: The liquid suspension form of this medication must be shaken well before using. Antibiotics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level. Do this by taking the medication at evenly spaced intervals throughout the day and night. Continue to take Cephalexin until the full prescribed amount is finished even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow resulting in a relapse of the infection.

Cephalexin is effective against anaerobic bacteria, but the sensitivity of alpha-hemolytic Streptococcus vary; approximately 10% of strains are resistant. Nearly 70% are intermediately sensitive. Patients allergic to penicillins can use a cephalosporin; the incidence of cross-reactivity between penicillins and cephalosporins is 1% when the allergic reaction to penicillin is delayed. If the patient has a history of immediate reaction to penicillin, the incidence of cross-reactivity is 20%; cephalosporins are contraindicated in these patients.
