Since 1903, the YWCA of Central Alabama has strived to create a more caring community. 100 years later the YW continues to plant the seeds of hope providing comfort where there is pain, love where there is loneliness and a light where there is darkness. The YWCA serves as a place of refuge, responding to the needs of women and their families providing hope and opportunities in a warm, family-like environment.The YW's programs and services focus on three major areas: childcare, domestic violence services and affordable housing. The YW ... sponsors a Women's Resource Center and a Visual and Performing Arts Gallery in addition to programs and events that enhance the well being of women and children in Central Alabama.

The Boys & Girls Club of Central Alabama is one of the oldest Clubs in the southeast. The Club was organized in 1901 by a group of women whose goal was to serve the boys who sold newspapers and give under-privileged boys living on the streets a better chance in life. Presently, the Clubs encompass ten facilities; two hubs, six in housing projects, one in conjunction with a park and recreation board.

The Battle of Horseshoe Bend was fought during the War of 1812 in central Alabama. On March 27, 1814, United States forces and Indian allies under General Andrew Jackson defeated the Red Sticks, a part of the Creek Indian tribe inspired by the Shawnee leader Tecumseh, effectively ending the Creek War.
