Census (U.S.): States
built 384 days ago
The United States' 1930 census was released on April 1, 2002. No April Fools joke, these insightful documents are a unique glimpse of Americans at the start of the Great Depression, the census being completed only months after the crash, before the full depth of the economic slide was known. Hitler's Third Reich had not yet begun encroaching on other European nations.

In additional to the decennial federal census, more localized versions are often used. An example of this is Massachusetts, which takes a statewide census every fifth year. Likewise, each community in Massachusetts takes a municipal census each year. Some states conducted limited censuses for various purposes which predate the 1790 federal census schedules. Various state archives can usually direct the researcher to these sources.

The census can be contrasted with sampling in which information is only obtained from a subset of a population. As such it is a method used for accumulating statistical data, and ... plays a part in democracy (voting). Census data is also commonly used for research, business marketing, planning purposes and not at least as a base for sampling surveys.
