For the close relatives of the fallen, the Cenotaph has long been a place of personal association and deep reflection. Royalty, famous military commanders, returned comrades, visiting dignitaries from many nations, as well as countless individuals, have all laid wreaths in memory of those who died in numerous wars. The word cenotaph is from the Greek words taphos–tomb, and kenos- empty; combined to indicate an “empty tomb”.

From Lutyens’ own “The Story of the Cenotaph” a copy of which is held in The National Archives file WORK 20/139, Lutyens gives the credit for suggesting the Cenotaph to Lloyd George. In 1919 Lloyd George had returned from a visit to France deeply impressed by the way the Arc de Triomphe and the catafalque had been linked and in his own words “envisaged our need for a point of homage to stand as a symbol of remembrance worthy of the reverent salute of an Empire mourning its million dead”. Lutyens describes how he was requested to design a suitable monument by the Office of Works. Lutyens original drawing, held in the Imperial War Museum, shows how Lutyens envisaged the Cenotaph. Lutyens chose the description “Cenotaph” for his monument “conveying the simple meaning of an empty tomb uplifted on a high pedestal.” Lutyens describes how the initial Cenotaph featured in the Peace Procession of 1919 and how soon afterwards a movement grew to have what was intended as a temporary monument replaced by a permanent one. Lutyens ... confirms that it was he who chose the simple inscription “The Glorious Dead”.
At the Cenotaph, 150 widows gathered to honour their husbands who were killed in wars fought by Britain. Today major events include a service at the new National War Memorial, Alrewas, Staffordshire, as well as ceremonies from the Falklands to France. For the first time there is even a 'virtual Cenotaph' organised online by the Legion.

The Cenotaph in Whitehall was designed by Edwin Lutyens as a memorial to those who died in the First World War. If the projected upwards, the vertical lines of the memorial would meet at infinity.

The Cenotaph is a monument to honour Bermuda’s war dead. Built in 1920 from limestone it’s a replica of the one in Whitehall, London. On November 11, a public holiday in Bermuda, a Remembrance Day Parade finishes here and honours those who gave their lives defending the freedom of others. The event usually draws a large crowd and is attended by the Governor, the Premier and other notable officials.
