Celsius: Scales
built 623 days ago
In 1742 he introduced his Celsius mercury thermometer where 100 was the frozing point of water and 0 was the boiling point. Two years later, Celsius died of tuberculosis at the age of 42. After his death the Celsius' thermometer scale was reversed with 0 as the frozing point of water and 100 as the boiling point. The turned-around scale was accepted as standard in Sweden and soon thereafter in most other countries.

Ask students if they recall the freezing point and boiling point of water on both the Celsius scale and the Fahrenheit scale. Let students access the WWW to assist them in finding the answers, or, the teacher can provide these values to students.

Scientists use the Kelvin scale, which is based on the Celsius scale, but has no negative numbers. Zero on the Kelvin scale is considered the be absolute zero; that is, the point at which all molecular motion stops.
