Figure 1: V. C. Scanlon and T. Sanders, Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology, 2nd edition. F. A. Davis, 1995. Cells are the smallest component of the body that can perform all of the basic life functions. Each cell performs specialized functions and plays a role in the maintenance of homeostasis. While each cell is an independent entity, it is highly affected by damage to neighboring cells. These various cell types combine to form tissues, which are basically collections of specialized cells that perform a relatively limited number of functions specific to that type of tissue. The human body is made up of several trillion cells; these cells are of various types, which can differ greatly in size, appearance and function.

Figure 2. The cells of eukaryotes and prokaryotes Cells are the structural and functional units of all living organisms. Some organisms, such as bacteria, are [U]nicellular, consisting of a single cell. Other organisms, such as humans, are multicellular, or have many cells—an estimated 100,000,000,000,000 cells! Each cell is an amazing world unto itself: it can take in nutrients, convert these nutrients into energy, carry out specialized functions, and reproduce as necessary. Even more amazing is that each cell stores its own set of instructions for carrying out each of these activities.
WASHINGTON, May 24, 2006 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Ansaldo Fuel Cells, a Finmeccanica company, is producing a highly innovative fuel cell design for both military and civilian applications. The company now has three prototype plants using an advanced, patented Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell (MCFC) stack. The newest plant has just started operating in Milan, Italy. The Hydrogen power plants can use any kind of hydrogen and carbon monoxide based fuel including ethanol, diesel, natural gas and pure hydrogen, and because of the innovative design can easily switch between fuels.
Cells carry on the many functions needed to sustain life. The most important of these functions is the ability to reproduce. Students will investigate the process of mitosis by observing yeast cells. They will compare the growth of yeast cells in warm vs. cold water, and will hypothesize as to which environment would be more conducive to cellular growth. Students will write their hypotheses and gather data in a science journal, which will ... include drawings, graphs, and words. As an extension, students will explore scientific drawing as a means of communicating ideas and information, and discuss opportunities that exist in the field of scientific illustration.
The Cell Cells were discovered by Robert Hooke (1635 - 1705) in cork A cell is the basic unit of animal and plant form and structure. Schwann and Schleiden postulated in 1838 that all organisms are composed of cells and they were the first persons who distinguished between animal and plant cells.
Adult and post-natal stem cells are often overlooked in favor of embryonic stem cells in the national debate over the therapeutic use of stem cells. Until now, it has been generally believed that embryonic stem cells had a greater capacity to multiply than post-natal stem cells, making them more desirable to research as a potential treatment, according to Johnny Huard, PhD, director of the Growth and Development Laboratory at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.
