When Celebrex was first released, Celebrex side effects were the subject of a Wall Street Journal article that linked ten deaths to Celebrex within the first three months of approval. Of the ten deaths related to harmful effects of Celebrex, half were due to gastrointestinal hemorrhage. There were another eleven reported non-lethal cases specifically mentioning gastrointestinal hemorrhage. The other deaths that were potentially a result of Celebrex side effects included heart attacks, kidney problems, and drug interaction. Although the FDA never declared that Celebrex side effects were directly responsible for these deaths, the FDA is now considering a requirement to mention Celebrex side effects specifically related to cardiovascular problems on a Celebrex warning label. There are experts that believe a Celebrex warning label is not enough and that a Celebrex recall should be issued.
Celebrex warning statements have long been issued regarding other serious risks that are associated with this medication. When Celebrex was first approved by the FDA in 1999 to treat the severe pain associated with arthritis and menstrual cramps, The Wall Street Journal published a Celebrex warning. In this article, the Journal cited ten deaths that had been linked to Celebrex use during the first three months of its availability. Of these deaths, five were reportedly the result of ulcers (gastrointestinal bleeding), two the result of heart attacks, one because of kidney problems, one the result of drug interaction complications, and the last cause of death was unknown. Though Celebrex use was eventually not assumed responsible for these deaths, this new Celebrex warning reiterates the potential for serious side effects associated with Celebrex use.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Based on how COX-2 works in the body, Celebrex and other COX-2 inhibitors may have additional side effects. Since COX-2 is involved in fighting ulcers, Celebrex could cause ulcers or prevent them from healing. COX-2 is ... present in the kidneys, so the drug could cause fluid retention or worsen hypertension. While none of these effects has been proven, doctors are advising patients on Celebrex to keep an eye out for symptoms related to ulcers and kidney problems, including blood in stools and general swelling. As with any medication, Celebrex could trigger an allergic reaction.

Celebrex has the generic name of celecoxib, and is marketed by Pfizer. It is a member of the class of drugs known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs... known as NSAIDs. It and other NSAIDs are used in the treatment of pain and inflammation. Celebrex is an extremely popular drug that has been widely prescribed to over 29 million people since the FDA approved it in 1998. Sales of Celebrex have resulted in huge profits for Pfizer. Celebrex is specifically prescribed for the treatment of acute pain, symptoms of various types of arthritis including osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and rheumatoid arthritis, in addition to severe menstrual pain and discomfort.

Celebrex is primarily used to relieve pain and inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. It is in a new class of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) known as "COX-2 inhibitors." Celebrex has ... shown to reduce inflammation and pain, just as older NSAIDs such as Motrin and Naprosyn do, by inhibiting the effect of a natural enzyme named COX-2. Celebrex, not like some older medications, doesn’t interfere with COX-1 (a similar substance of COX-1) that is known to exert a shielding effect on the lining of the stomach. Due to this fact Celebrex is less likely to cause bleeding and ulcers that is sometimes associated with long term use of the older nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Celebrex is also known to lower the number of colorectal polyps (growths in the wall of the rectum and lower intestine) in people that suffer from a condition known as familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) that is an inherited tendency to develop large numbers of colorectal polyps that eventually become cancerous.

Despite this serious Celebrex warning, Pfizer has stated that they have no plans to issue a Celebrex recall. Instead, Pfizer has stated that they will, "take immediate steps to fully understand the results and rapidly communicate new information to regulators, physicians and patients around the world," regarding the veracity of this Celebrex warning. This recent Celebrex warning is the result of preliminary evidence from one of two long term cancer trials. In the second trial, patients have been given 400 milligrams of Celebrex. To date, the results of this second trial show no evidence that patients are at an increased risk for developing adverse cardiovascular reactions.
