Celebrex: Vioxx and Celebrex

Celebrex, Vioxx and Bextra are the three COX-2 inhibitors that have come onto the market so far. The medications block the action of the COX-2 enzyme, which is associated with inflammation and pain. Researchers found in early studies that the enzyme has heart-protective qualities, and so eliminating or reducing its activity could, in theory... reduce its beneficial effects.

Celebrex is the only member of the class of drugs that included Vioxx and Bextra not to have been withdrawn from the market over concerns they elevate the risk of heart attacks and strokes in adults. An earlier FDA review questioned the cardiovascular risks of long-term use of the drug in children.

Vioxx and Celebrex were both widely successful drugs for the pain relief of arthritis symptoms. Both emerging to the U.S. market in 1999, Merck and Pfizer both took part of a major direct-to-consumer marketing campaign of their drugs Vioxx and Celebrex.
