built 518 days ago
In one year, Celebrex brought in $2.2 billion attributed to the company's aggressive marketing campaigns. Celebrex advertisements claimed that the arthritis medication was safer and gentler on the stomach compared to older NSAIDS. A study performed on Celebrex, called the CLASS study, concluded a "clinically meaningful" safety advantage of Celebrex over older NSAIDS had not in fact been established.

With the approval of Celebrex ... the FDA warned that it is not definite that Celebrex will cause less gastrointestinal distress than existing NSAIDs. Long-term studies must be done which show the long-term effect of the drug. For now Celebrex will carry the same warnings on its label as all other NSAIDs.

Since Celebrex was released in 1998 there have been concerns regarding the effects of Celebrex, as it has been associated with dangerous cardiovascular problems. The upside of Celebrex is that it does not damage stomachs like similar drugs, but studies have shown that the drug may cause dangerous heart problems.
Celecoxib (Celebrex) is 375 fold more selective for COX-2 enzyme compared to the COX-1 enzyme, It does not inhibit COX-1 at therapeutic doses in contrast to standard NSAID's currently available. Studies show effective benefit with no gastrointestinal adverse effects compared to placebo.

"Careful analysis of the data from the Celebrex trials showed no apparent benefit for those who took the drug," says Packard researcher, Daniel Drachman, who initiated the study and was instrumental in getting it underway. "Naturally, we're disappointed."
