Celebrex: Patients
built 673 days ago
Celebrex (Celecoxib) is used to relieve the pain, tenderness, inflammation (swelling), and stiffness caused by arthritis and to treat painful menstrual periods and pain from other causes. It is ... used to reduce the number of polyps in the colon and rectum in patients with a disease called familial adenomatous polposis. Celebrex is in a class of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) called COX-2 inhibitors. It works by stopping the body's production of a substance that causes pain and inflammation. COX-2 inhibitors may cause less stomach bleeding and ulcers than similar medications.

Celebrex has not been shown to reduce colorectal, duodenal or other FAP-related cancers. It is not known whether the effects of Celebrex will last after treatment is stopped. The efficacy and safety of Celebrex treatment in FAP patients beyond six months has not been studied. Therefore, the usual care of FAP patients should not be altered because of the concurrent administration of Celebrex. In particular, the frequency of routine endoscopic surveillance should not be decreased and prophylactic colectomy or other FAP-related surgeries should not be delayed.
Celebrex was tested in clinical trials involving more than 13,000 patients and healthy persons, including 50 different studies in 23 countries. Celebrex was demonstrated to be as effective as prescription-strength naproxen in treating arthritis pain and inflammation. In patients with osteoarthritis, Celebrex improved pain, stiffness, and functions such as walking and bending among others. Celebrex was associated with significantly fewer upper gastrointestinal ulcers than either naproxen or ibuprofen in clinical studies.
Celebrex and other NSAIDs can ... lead to liver damage. Warning signs include nausea, vomiting, tiredness, appetite loss, itching, yellow coloring of skin or eyes, flu-like symptoms and dark urine. Patients experiencing any of these symptoms should discontinue use of Celebrex immediately and consult their physician (1).
Celebrex is generally well tolerated. In studies, the most common side effects were indigestion, diarrhea, and abdominal pain and were generally mild to moderate. Although people who take Celebrex are not very likely to get stomach ulcers, serious stomach ulcers can occur without warning symptoms. Therefore, patients and their doctors should remain alert for any signs and symptoms of stomach bleeding.
