Celebrex: Heart Attacks
built 675 days ago
A new study links Merck's Vioxx, along with Pfizer's Celebrex and Bextra to increased risk of heart attack. The study reinforces earlier findings that raised questions about the safety of the three drugs.
Experts do not know why Celebrex and Vioxx may raise the risk of heart attack or stroke. Celebrex is the 10-th most popular drug in the U.S., but the new Celebrex safety concerns could have devastating results for Pfizer.
A new warning is out about the popular arthritis drug Celebrex, saying it increased heart attacks in a recent study. This is the same class of drugs that contains Vioxx, which was pulled from the market due to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke, and Bextra, which had a heart warning added to its label this year. What does this news mean for you, and what can you do?

On the heels of the recall of Vioxx in September 2004, results of a study were issued on December 17, 2004 linking Celebrex to and increased risk for heart attacks. At the time of this publication, Celebrex was still available on the market.

[F]or now, the FDA has concluded that the benefits of the drug outweigh the potential Celebrex adverse side effects, as long as doctors properly select patients and inform their patients of the drugÕs dangers. The danger of a Celebrex heart attack was not enough for the FDA to pull the plug on this drug for the moment.

An independent study carried out at the University of Pennsylvania has shown that your risk of having a heart attack is three times greater with Vioxx than with Celebrex. Celebrex and Vioxx are both arthritis pain medications (prescription drugs).
